Slavery

Growing up I was taught that slavery was an acceptable and not so bad thing. I've learned this week that form of teaching is wrong. Slavery is a very evil thing. Making someone do anything against their will is wrong and making them work is no doubt a very evil thing. Slaves were treated very poorly and were looked at as property instead of human life. They could perform all tasks that the slave owner could but in that time period they were looked down upon because it helped the southern economy. Slave owners tore slaves mentally and physically. They were beaten to show that the owner is superior to the slave. If they revolted or ran away they were beat harder or even had their toes cut off. Slavery isn't a race thing being know that any race could be a slave. Slaves were brought to America, sometimes by their own people, by boats that were packed past maximum capacity. This made living conditions very terrible. It was a long voyage because back then they didn't have motors on boats. Over 25% of the slaves died on each voyage. It is terribly wrong for someone to rip a family or individual from their life, pack them into a boat, and carry them to a land far away to work against their will. Everyone is human and owning any human is completely wrong; no matter the race. Slaves were auctioned off like property; they were oiled up to make their muscle tone more noticeable which gave the seller more money because the better shape the slave was in the more that slave was worth. The slave epidemic should have never happened. All lives should be treated the same no matter the race or gender. However, slavery is a part of the past of America and America would benefit by learning from it instead of still discriminating.
