Slavery in America

In my recent history classes, slavery has been a really dumbed down to where we could understand it and not know the true meaning of slavery. My first impression when I think of slavery is a certain living thing, human or not, that is help captive and does not have the same freedom as everyone else. The slaves that were brought over from Africa were used for many things. The objectives they were put through were rough and rigorous tasks that people wouldn't have been through normally unless for punishment. That's the problem, they were not viewed as humans, they were viewed as property. When they would come over on the ships to bring them to America, thousands and sometimes millions were brought over. This was called the middle passage. During this journey, the slaves were treated horribly, beaten, and many died. The ship owners tried to figure out a way to stop the slaves from dying but non the assumptions were successful. All the slaves sat inside the ship and didn't come out until one day before they came up on shore so the slaves wouldn't know where they were to prevent them escaping. They would also work the slaves out a day or two before sailing them so when it was time to auction, then they would pay more for the slave. They would also oil their bodies, usually naked, to make them looked more defined and sale quicker. Younger men and women would sale for more money because the men were stronger and last longer and the women could reproduce. This was a very sad situation that isn't expressed as strongly as it should to show people what really happened and what these people went through.
