Slavery

Originally I have been taught that slavery was a terrible thing that caused the south to be driven to succeed from the union, was racists, and is why the south is poor today. My ignorance has been lifted more now as I have learned more about slavery and its ties to the south and the southern wealth. African slaves were brought to the United States because of the need for labor, and because Indian slaves were dying from disease. I didn't know before that the south was actually the wealthiest part of America at this time. With a slave costing so much money and the cycle of money that went: slave - slave works - you sell crop - buy more slaves. Another thing I've learned is that not all white people were rich and has slaves. Only one percent actually has very many slaves. Slaves would be bought by a "broker" so to say and then sold to plantation owners. The broker would have a auction where he would show off his newly cleaned and oiled slaves. Plantation owners would buy then and there on credit. The more slaves you had the more wealthy you were.
Another terrible thing is that whites became more and more efficient about selling and buying slaves. They even wrote a book on how to pack slaves into a ship where they could fit more in the ship using the books method. They experimented on was they could break slaves' spirit so they would not revolt against the master. That was the main concern. Revolt all things that the white men did against the slaves was for them not to leave or revolt. They used scare tactics because the slaves were their wealth and the wealth for them was going to run away.
