Articles and Constitution

The Articles of Confederation played a big role in laying the foundation for America. It was the first written constitution of the United States. These articles helped the states remain independent. The United States still had congress which they used as a last resort for settling disputes among the states. The articles were agreed on by the Continental Congress on November 15,1777. At this point there were only 13 states. There was also no president, House of Representatives, or Senate. There was no judicial executive branch of government. The states made decisions on their own unless further problems occurred. Many were for a new constitution as the Articles of Confederation had its flaws. One group, the Anti-Fedaralists, were against changing the Articles.

After the Articles of Confederation came the Constitution. The Constitution gave the majority of the power to the central government. Along with the shifting of power, the Executive and Judicial branches of government were introduced. The constitution gave the central government the ability to create laws and tax the people. But, with the constitution a sense of order was created. The people now had rules and laws they had to follow. Also, someone would now be the main leader for America, the president. After the central government gained the majority of the power, they now had the ability to build an army. The constitution was exactly what the United States needed to create order and equal separation of power with checks and balance.
