The articles of confederation was ratified because the congress felt we needed a strong government to defeat Great Britain. It was the first written constitution of the United States. Under this article all thirteen states stayed independent, but gave congress the authority to make treaties and alliances. This article was the first set of rules for the United States. These rules stated that the states have all the power and everything was voted by the state. It also stated that their was no chief executive and no judiciary only a congress. This article gave the freedom America wanted with allowing us to make trades,sign treaties,interact with other countries,and some other foreign affairs.
The constitution gave more power to the government. It set up three branches,executive,judicial,and legislative,but all have equal power.some of the states thought this would give to much control to the government. These people where called the anti federalist. So in order for some of the states to sign they had to promise to come up with basic citizen rights like freedom of speech,press,and religion. We needed the constitution because the article of confederation had weaknesses. The article created a unicameral legislature which
Means no separation in powers. The articles gave no power to the central government. They had no authority to raise money,tax,or regulate interstate trade. The constitution created a central government that had limited power and basic right for citizens.
