When coming to the new world each European country had a different motive. One thing is for sure, they all planned on benefitting in some way whether it be through business, new land, trade, or profiting from gold and silver.
Some like the English planned on making North America their new home. They believed the new world gave them the ability to express themselves and have religious freedom. The English who were coming to the new world to escape religious persecution were known as the Puritans. They believed the English church was corrupt and they began seeking somewhere to reform. Little did they know, it wasn't going to be the smooth ride they had hoped for. Britain still maintained control over them. This lead to a revolt against Great Britain in which the English came away victorious. They were finally able to have the freedom they were wanting.
The French had different motives. The French didn't plan on settling in the new world. Their main objective was business and trade. Fish and iron trade was pretty common among the Frenchmen. The Indians had already discovered lots of great fishing spots but, they hadn't discovered one located on the northeast coast which they used for trade along with the Dutch. Most of the trade the French did was to acquire animal fur to make clothing.
Spain's main focus was acquiring as much land as they could as quick as they could. Conquest was very common with Spain as well. They looked for any riches they could find. The Spanish did not plan on making the new world their new home as they took all the resources they could and left.
